Georgia Tech to appeal NCAA decision

Posted by aifkod on July 31, 2011

Georgia Tech has notified the NCAA of its plans to appeal the decision made by the NCAA?s Committee on Infractions announced earlier this month, according to the school’s website.

Georgia Tech was required to notify the NCAA of its intent to appeal by July 28. The specific grounds of the appeal are still under consideration, but the university has 30 days to file a written appeal.

Based on history, it doesn’t look good for the Jackets. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, only one out of 13 appeals has been granted.

Somali man recalls horrors of fleeing famine (AP)

Posted by aifkod on July 31, 2011

DADAAB, Kenya ? When al-Qaida-linked militants learned that Ahmedhashim Mawlid Abdi and his family were planning to flee Somalia’s famine, they threw the 40-year-old father of seven in jail for two days.

Over the next 17 days, as they made their escape, a gang of gunmen robbed them of the little food they had, Abdi’s pregnant wife was raped in front of him, and his 7-year-old son died of starvation and disease. They were even attacked by a lion.

When they finally made it to the Dagahaley refugee camp in neighboring Kenya, their struggles were far from over. Food rations in the overcrowded camp are “just enough to survive on,” Abdi said. And the future is uncertain.

As Somalia’s famine unfolds in the middle of a war zone, some 2.2 million people are in peril in an area controlled by the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab that is inaccessible to aid groups.

In an extended interview conducted in Somali with The Associated Press, Abdi describes the drought-ravaged region he and his family escaped and the plight facing him and tens of thousands of other refugees in camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Q: What your life was like in Somalia?

A: We were nomads and lived off our sheep and goats and cows. During the rainy seasons we drank their milk, and during the dry seasons we sold some of them and used the money to buy food, milk and sugar from the local market. We were also farmers.

Conditions have changed. Several seasons passed without enough rain. It is God’s act, not human’s. The current drought in Somalia has affected us in every possible way. It affected our animals and farms and our lives. The ongoing conflict in our country has also added to our problems. When two elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers.

Q: What did you do after you lost all your animals and the rains still did not come?

A: We fled to the nearest town, Afmadow. We have a Somali saying that goes: A town has many ways to give you a new lease on life. But Afmadow was in a completely different situation when we arrived. It was in the hands of al-Shabab. The militants harassed anyone they believed was opposed to them. I did odd jobs, like fetching firewood from the bush and building houses. But when the going got tough, I decided to flee with six children. I left two more children ? a 4-year-old girl and a 20-year-old ? with relatives.

Q: Did al-Shabab prevent you from fleeing the country?

A: Yes. We sneaked out in the middle of the night and headed to an area far away from our actual direction so the militants couldn’t trace us. They put me in jail for 48 hours after they suspected me of leaving the town to head to Kenya.

Their logic is: Kenya is a Christian country and if you go there, you’re a Christian. I was released after local elders intervened. They kicked and slapped me on the face. They even dragged me like a corpse. They said to me: ‘You are an apostate,’ a word that angered me very much.

Q: Tell me about the perils you faced?

A: We faced hunger, thirst, danger and exhaustion. It took us 17 days to arrive here (at Dagahaley refugee camp). One night a lion almost ate me before I scared it away with my flashlight. Along the way, I carried my 5-year-old daughter on my back and 10 kilograms of rice. My wife also carried a 2-year-old daughter on her back. She was four months pregnant. Luckily, we found relatives on the way and they relieved us of the goods by allowing us to offload them on the donkey-pulled cart.

Q: What was the worst thing that happened?

A: The worst experience we faced was when gunmen ambushed. The gang robbed us of the little food we had with us and raped our women in front of us as if they wanted us to witness their horrors. The gang was made up of 15 gunmen and we were five families. They raped all the five women. While some men raped the women, others kept watch over them. That ordeal was the worst I have ever faced in my life. I once thought of looking for ways to get a gun to take revenge.

Only three days after that I lost my 7-year-old boy to hunger, exhaustion and disease. He came down with a severe fever and cold but got no treatment. He died at night as we rested. His mother cried a lot, but I accepted God’s will. I didn’t cry.

Q: How do you see your life as a refugee here?

A: The refugee life is not easy. What I found here is different from what I was thinking of before I came here. I thought a refugee’s life in Kenya was like a paradise. I thought that there will be plenty of food. But the rations we receive are just an amount on which we can survive. Not a satisfactory one, but in fact better than the destitution in Somalia.

Q: How do you see your future now?

A: I have high hopes that things will improve. No condition is permanent. I believe in God and pray that he improves my life. I’m hopeful that my children will also get a proper education and help me in the future.

Q: Are you thinking of returning to Somalia at any time soon?

A: Yes, if ? and only if ? it becomes safe. I will return to Somalia only if a full peace dominates there. It is my country and the country of my father and grandfathers. But if it remains as it is now, I will go to any other place where I can find peace.

Q: What is your advice to other Somalis still in the country?

A: I say to them: Believe in God and pray a lot to save you from the problems you’re currently facing. No place is better than your home country.

Q: Any word for the international community?

A: The world should take the Somali problem seriously. It was dragging on and on without any solutions. The world should help Somalis. They have suffered enough.

Food on Film: Mid-August Lunch | Central Coast Foodie

Posted by aifkod on July 31, 2011

Having just returned from an Ohio family reunion, I particularly enjoyed this quiet but entertaining Italian film that focuses on family, flavor, and food for living well. Directed by Gianni Di Gregorio who also plays the lead role of Gianni, the 50-ish son of a genteel lady in her 80s, Mid-August Lunch?(Pranzo di Ferragosto) takes place in a nearly-empty Rome. With so many Romans at the beach for the August 15 holiday of Pranzo di Ferragosto (the Feast of Assumption), the city feels emptied to those who stay behind.

Discussing which shops might be open during the holiday to get supplies for lunch

Gianni?s life, however, has never seemed more full of people (actually, ladies) and he?s busier than ever during this down time for the city, having become the temporary minder of three ladies in addition to his Mama. Suddenly responsible for a set of four sweet but strong ladies in their 80s, Gianni confronts the challenge with eventual verve that he propels with numerous bottles of white wine. The food featured in Mid-August Lunch inspires the action and brings the individual characters together for meals at key points in the narrative. So central to the story are these two meals that their recipes are included in the DVD booklet.

Maria and Gianni discuss Pasta al Forno

Pasta Al Forno

Soon after she arrives, Maria, the most demure of the four ladies in the film, begins immediately to produce her famous Pasta Al Forno that plays a transgressive role later in the film. As the pasta bakes, Grazia arrives with a list of foods and drink she must avoid, per the direction of her son the doctor. After too many years of ?no tomatoes, no alcohol, no pasta? and other prohibitions, Grazia seizes the moment and raids the fridge late at night to finally get her fill of some outstanding pasta casserole. ?You?ve eaten all the pasta!? cries Gianni, who was supposed to prevent the ladies from eating or doing anything forbidden. However, he?s only one man against four powerful older ladies so he has his work cut out for him. Not surprisingly, the ladies win.

Filetti Di Persico Con Patate

From the start of the film, Gianni comports himself as the good son he clearly was for his own mother, and he extends that kindness to the other ladies in his care during this Catholic holiday that celebrates the assumption to heaven of the Virgin Mary. After a night of octogenarian debauchery that included discovering Grazia?s pasta raid and retrieving youthful Marina from a neighboring restaurant but only after drinking with her for hours, Gianni wakes to find the ladies making plans for another meal together at what has become for them a most pleasant vacation from their more structured and monitored normal lives. He had planned to have the ladies all back to their respective families by noon, but they have made other plans.

The titular mid-August lunch

In the midst of this mid-August near-shutdown of the entire city of Rome, Gianni works to collect and prepare a meal appropriate for his guests, who now will eat and drink according to their own desires and not according to a set of prohibitions. As he travels the streets of Rome on the back of a friend?s scooter to collect the ingredients for the meal, he travels beyond his neighborhood and out to the ocean to buy fresh perch filets direct from the fisherman. Another glass of wine, and its back to prepare this special?meal for the ladies.

Maria and Valeria with hats

The small moments of the ladies in this film capture so much truth of human relationships as we age, such as when we see just a glimpse of Maria happily trying on Valeria?s collection of fancy hats through a distant doorway. The opportunity for freedom does not often present itself so easily to these great women as it did over the course of this Pranzo di Ferragosto holiday. Loathe to lose the freedom they have discovered at Gianni?s, they plot to keep the party going. Their children may have thought they were escaping responsibility, but it was the ladies who experienced the true liberation and companionship.

The food scenes propel the action of this film but also reinforce the benefits in improved relationships promoted through a Slow Food approach to eating and living. Conversation grows during the production of a good meal whether in the kitchen or setting the table for the guests. Good food cooked with love is one of the best gifts to share with your family.

Highly Recommended

What Is an Affinity Space? Some Initial Thoughts : E1n1verse

Posted by aifkod on July 30, 2011

James Paul Gee introduced the idea of affinity groups in his seminal What Video Games Have To Teach Us about Language, Learning, and Literacy (Gee, 2007). It is defined as the people associated with a given semiotic domain.?That basically is a domain in which people use particular symbols or language to communicate and interact.?We?re already well used to the concept, even if we don?t realize it. A given academic discipline, for example, will have its own vocabulary and, in that context, use language in a particular way, even if others use it differently in another context.?It?s all about situated cognition and situated meaning.?Games and their communities will have their own semiotics and constitute a semiotic domain. Members of an affinity group will have a way to recognize others who belong and to assess what counts as acceptable or recognizable within that semiotic domain.

The key problem he perceives is that we attempt to a label a group of people and then have issues about who is ?in? or ?out? of the group. This comes about in particular because:

  • Community implies belonging, which may not always be the case, especially in classrooms and workspaces.
  • Community brings the idea of people being members, related to belonging, but also to shared goals or a collective purpose that may not be in force.
  • Community of practice has been applied to all manner of things, possibly ?missing the trees for the forest.?

Starting the notion of spaces, rather than community, he argues, can give us an analytical lens with which to examine classrooms and the activities that occur within them without the baggage that community of practice brings with it. ?In affinity spaces people ?bond? first and foremost to an endeavour or interest and secondarily, if at all, to each other.? (Gee, 2007 p.98)

Spaces (general) have the following features:

  • Content, both design content and interactional content, i.e. how people play and how they organize their behaviours, beliefs, values and actions around the content. Design content is created by content generators.
  • Organization of content and interactions. Content organization arises from the design of a game. Interactional organization comes from interactions on and with the space and the people in it.
  • Portals, which are entrances into the space, e.g. a website to discuss a game, the game disc itself, wikis, etc. Some of these become content generators in their own right.

I believe guilds in World of Warcraft are examples of a community of practice in many cases, because they do exhibit shared goals, joint enterprise, and mutual engagement. Not all guilds will be possibly, but those are probably also the guilds that don?t manage to live that long. Ducheneaut et al?(2007) found that in a 6-month period, out of 3000+ guilds, 54% had disappeared. One question Dave White (2007) posed in his GLS 3 talk was how long does it take to form or seed a community? That is a good question. One of the problems with adapting the community practices in WoW to higher education (online or otherwise) is that guilds do take some time to evolve, especially if they involve people who were previously unknown to each other. This is perhaps where Gee?s idea of affinity spaces comes into play. Affinity spaces, Gee says, have the following eleven characteristics:

  • Common endeavour, not race, class, gender, or disability, is primary.
  • Newbies and masters and everyone else share common space.
  • Some portals are strong generators.
  • Content organization is transformed by interactional organization.
  • Encourages intensive and extensive knowledge.
  • Encourages individual and distributed knowledge.
  • Encourages dispersed knowledge.
  • Uses and honours tacit knowledge.
  • Many different forms and routes to participation.
  • Lots of different routes to status.
  • Leadership is porous and leaders are resources.

Reproduced from (Gee, 2007 p. 98-101).

A space can be more or less of an affinity space and can possess degrees of the characteristics. It is not a binary, prescriptive list. The theory then is that if we incorporate these ideas into our educational environments, we can help forge more cohesiveness, autonomy, and, in the end learning. Many of these characteristics are also shared by communities of practice and foster digital literacies. Those are the characteristics of dispersed and distributed knowledge, which may be generated by the students themselves, who become portals in their own right. Autonomy is forged by individual knowledge and content organization being transformed by interactional organization?which bears a striking resemblance to Downes and Siemens?s ideas about connectivism (c.f. Downes, 2007; Siemens, 2008). The last two can also be artefacts of digital literacies or encouraged by a connectivist paradigm: the tools used allow many types of participation. Some people may participate in wikis or make videos, while others may only post on forums. Others may take on roles within the game. My partner ?Basil?, for example, in Eve Online does not have a lot of time to play with his guild because of a time zone difference. He is, however, extremely active in their forums and became a valued member because of that. He is participating in the Eve affinity space but also belongs to a community of practice within Eve.

VATICAN CITY ? The papal ambassador to the United States, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, who helped bring about a meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and clerical sex abuse victims three years ago, has died in a U.S. hospital, the Vatican said Thursday.

Sambi, 73, died Wednesday in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where he had been placed on assisted ventilation. He had undergone surgery two weeks ago and was readmitted to the hospital following postoperative complications.

The Italian prelate had served as papal representative in Washington since 2006, one of Pope Benedict XVI’s first major appointees. Previous posts in the Vatican’s diplomatic corps included Israel and Indonesia.

In his Washington assignment, Sambi helped arrange a meeting between abuse victims and Benedict, one of the highlights of the pope’s 2008 visit to the United States.

Cardinal Sean O’Malley, who had been sent to Boston after the archdiocese was rocked by the scandal, had invited Benedict to the city. When Boston was not included in the trip, he worked with Sambi to bring Benedict and victims together in Washington.

O’Malley mourned Sambi’s passing on Thursday, saying he represented the Pope with distinction and great skill in the United States.

“He was an engaging and dedicated leader who had great love for a deep commitment to the Catholic faithful of our country,” O’Malley said in a statement. “The Archbishop was a good and holy man and he will be greatly missed.”

The previous year, Sambi caused a stir when he described difficulties in Vatican-Israeli relations, blaming the Jewish state in an interview for failing to keep promises related to church land, taxes and travel restrictions on Arab clergy.

The Vatican said the interview was a reflection of his personal experiences during his former diplomatic posting.
